Well, I really don't have any advice, I fluctuate.. Sometimes I am the clean/tidy police, other times I am a slob. I have to admit though, I am a much happier person when my house is in order.
One thing I find is cleaning and tidying after everyone is in bed, I love going to bed and waking up to the house looking like no kids have ever lived in it. (after 5 minutes that changes!).. But if you keep on top of things it will become easier.
If you need to start from the beginning , do a room at a time, go crazy, throw things out...
Have fun..

Yeah, I agree, it is much easier to tidy when they are asleep or other wise occupied. But, if you are trying to incorporate them helping you, that may not be the way to go. I'd suggest blocking off a certain time frame during the day for "Chore Time" and telling them that they have to do their chores during that time...you might even set a timer so they know how long they have.

I've realized that it is much easier to keep things clean if I sweep and Swiffer several times during the week (it really only takes a minute), keep things picked up and keep the dishwasher ready for dirty dishes. It makes it easy to keep them up when you just keep putting the dirty ones in there until it's full and you can run it. Otherwise, it seems like a huge task to clean the caked on food and load the dishwasher only to have more dishes than it can handle. That's all I can think of right now. ;o) I've written a book.
